I was hired by Snapchat Spectacles and hervisions (which I am no longer affiliated with due to them not paying me for my work) to generate augmented reality filters and experiment with the Snapchat spectacles and glasses as a part of their campaign for snap lenses.
I created full body filters and spectacles filters featuring colorful fish of my own design inspired by cartoons and deep-sea biodiversity. These magical sea creatures were placed into our world above water, letting them swim around while allowing users to embody them immersively.
The technical challenge involved creating filters that seamlessly integrated with both the Snapchat mobile app and physical Spectacles hardware, requiring optimization for different processing capabilities and user interaction methods.
My design process drew from extensive research into bioluminescent organisms and deep-sea creature morphology. I was particularly inspired by anglerfish, jellyfish, and nudibranchs, whose otherworldly forms already exist between reality and fantasy.
Unfortunately, despite the project's creative success and positive user reception, the compensation promised by hervisions was never delivered, highlighting ongoing issues where artists' labor is undervalued by companies capitalizing on emerging technologies.
